What is Digital Certificate?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is your digital identifier that is issued by a Certifying Authority (CA). It typically contains your details like name, email, country, APNIC account name and your public key. Digital Certificates use PKI which means that data that has been digitally signed or encrypted by a particular private key can only be decrypted by its corresponding public key. A digital certificate is an electronic way of using your details while doing business or other transactions on the Web.

Difference between Encryption and Signing

Message encryption provides secrecy of messages. It allows users to encode the document by using their public key which can be decoded only with the corresponding private key. To put it in simple terms when sending messages digitally you encrypt using their public key and the recipient uses their private key to decrypt or decode it.It is one of the most secure way protecting confidential documents.

Message signing helps identify the message source of the message. It comes with additional parameters of ensuring data integrity, message authentication, and non-repudiation. While signing, you use your private key to write message's signature, and they use your public key to check if it's really yours.
